Dave Sorokowsky, proprietor of Paph Paradise in California, will join us in October for “Maudiae Paphiopedilums”. According to the AOS, “the original Paphiopedilum Maudiae, registered in 1900, was a cross of albino cultivars (lacking red pigment) of Paphiopedilum callosum and Paphiopedilum lawrenceanum. The resulting flowers were white and green. Normally pigmented cultivars of Paphiopedilum callosum and Paphiopedilum lawrenceanum were crossed soon thereafter, making the “coloratum” clones of Paphiopedilum Maudiae. For a slightly different flower form, Paphiopedilum Maudiae was crossed with Paphiopedilum fairrieanum to create Paphiopedilum Faire-Maud, registered in 1909.Yet modern-day hybridizers have resumed breeding with Paphiopedilum Maudiae. For instance, utilizing ever darker cultivars of Paphiopedilum callosum and Paphiopedilum lawrenceanum, as well as those of other species such as Paphiopedilum curtisii, they are creating flowers so heavily pigmented they appear virtually black in color.”

Dave and his wife Stacey have 20 years experience growing and breeding top quality orchids with close to 100 AOS and CSA awards. Having been a major customer of the Orchid Zone, they were able to acquire some of the finest plants in the world from them, and now they are using these exceptional orchids to produce their own new and unique breeding lines. Dave is also an AOS accredited judge.
