Next Meeting: Feb. 6, 2012 - Jeanne Kaeding on Oncidium Intergenerics
Oncidium maculatum, Mexican/Central American species.
Grower: Bloomfield Orchids. Shown at the GROS Spring Show, April, 2011.
Jeanne Kaeding became entranced with orchids in 1975 after looking at an AOS Bulletin and reading two library books on the subject. She has been under their influence ever since. Jeanne began growing on a windowsill, graduated to lights, now has a greenhouse.
When she retired, Jeanne became an AOS student judge at the Toronto Center and is now a fully accredited AOS judge. In that capacity, she travels to orchid shows near and far to participate in ribbon and AOS judgings - an activity which she considers another way of feeding her orchid addiction. Judging is also a good way to see a show in detail, according to Jeanne.
Jeanne has found yet another way to play with orchids. She makes her own hybrids and then sows and grows the seed in sterile flasks. Two of her main areas of interest are Cymbidiums and Oncidiums, though, as she says to friends, “the advantage to being an amateur is that I can grow what I like.” Consequently, her collection is diverse.
In Jeanne’s talk on "Oncidium Intergenerics: Basic Species," she will show some of the species used in these intergenerics hybrids, how you can recognize them in those hybrids, what characteristics, good and bad, they give to their progeny.
We will not be going to dinner prior to the meeting. Jeanne won't be bringing plants to sell, so all members are free to bring in their own orchids to sell at the meeting.
Orchids 101 - Next meeting: Feb. 6, 2012
The Genesee Region Orchid Society, Inc. has always been an advocate of orchid education; our Orchids 101 program is an ongoing series of informal group discussions/demonstrations on many different orchid topics.
- Feb. 6 topic: TBA
- The doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the "formal" Orchids 101 meeting begins at 6:15 p.m.
- Following a 30-minute presentation on an orchid topic, the group will discuss any plants, problems, topics, or questions that growers might have.
- Orchids 101 will conclude at 7:00 p.m., which will allow plenty of time to socialize or purchase plants/raffle tickets prior to the main orchid meeting that begins at 7:15 p.m.
You don’t have to be new to orchids to come to Orchids 101! We can all learn something new - and a refresher course is never a bad idea. We would love to have more advanced growers at Orchids 101 to contribute their comments and experience. All are welcome.

Our regular meeting night is the first Monday following the first Sunday of each month. We occasionally change the meeting date as our schedule requires, but we always list the correct date well in advance both on this website and in our monthly newsletter. Our meetings are open to everyone without charge - feel free to attend and find out what our Society is all about!
Meetings typically consist of a brief business meeting to conduct our club's routine activities, a special presentation on an orchid subject, an orchid raffle (2 tickets for $1), and a Show Table where members can display their flowering plants for everyone to see.
